A talented mechanical design engineer, he became the self-appointed CAD consultant to the project and took the dream of the ST-L and made it manufacturable. By all reports, the ST-L has no vices. It cruises around 80 knots at 4800 rpm and up to 113 knots at higher power settings.

It stalls around 40 knots, power off. Frank Johnson at Performance Propeller has been "incredibly generous" and provided the climb prop that is currently being utilized (and is a piece of art). Hartzell Propeller has introduced six new propellers, including one that is of specific interest to homebuilders, the Talon.

The Talon is a three-bladed carbon fiber composite propeller, now available for both experimental and certified aircraft. According to Hartzell, the Talon features a new enhanced aerodynamic design, and is produced using the company's ASC-II resin transfer carbon fiber process.

Jamie said he hopes to have two more kits available in the United States in the near future; the Veloce 600 Pressurized Twin, and the Veloce 200 which Jamie said will be comparable to a Lancair Legacy.

Scaled at 95 percent of the original's size, a finished kit will weigh 300 pounds less than an original. One concession is that the kit will not be aerobatic, but according to Nick, it will have a higher useful load.

Test pilot Brooks Mershon shares that "At the risk of sounding like a cliché, it flies like a Cub...or, if not a Cub, a Cessna 150. "However, for those who want to make their own cowl, it can be deleted from the kit." Kit production started on March 1 of this year. Current lead time for partial kits (such as the fuselage, wings and tail) is approximately two months, with a four-month lead time for complete airframe kits.

There has been significant interest in the ST-L, and some of the kindest praise was from Dick VanGrunsven who, after checking it out at AirVenture, commented, "Why hasn't someone done this before?" Initially powered by a 95-hp Menasco Pirate B-4 engine, the ST went on to further developments and variations, but its timeless allure remains in its graceful lines.

The combination of a modern (for the time) semimonocoque fuselage with strut-braced wings, open cockpit and a graceful aesthetic appearance has drawn admirers since its debut. One fan is Nick Pfannenstiel, founder of Timber Tiger Aircraft.

Thumbing through an AeroCrafter Homebuilt Aircraft Sourcebook, the ST was the one airplane that caught his eye and ignited a passion that forever changed his life. When towing the prototype across the country to AirVenture, there was a mishap when the tailwheel wasn't properly secured.

While bouncing along, it eventually collapsed, damaging the rear bulkhead and requiring a redesign. After reviewing what happened and performing structural analysis, it was determined that the bulkhead took the equivalent of more than 36,000 landings before it deformed.

The redesign should tolerate even more. Build time is estimated at around 1500 hours for the standard kit, with significant time savings if the quickbuild fuselage option is selected. As of 2021, the estimated average cost to build is $75,000 to $90,000, but the price will vary from plane to plane depending on the engine and other options.

Aerolithium batteries have a management system that protects them from both overcharging and deep discharging if the master is left on, never allowing them to drain to less than 12.6 volts to ensure that cranking power is always available.

In addition, the batteries will also go to sleep after 72 hours. The company also offers backup batteries that will power your flat-panel electronic flight instrument system in the event of alternator failure and battery drain.

So, what's a nice Ryan like this doing in the homebuilt display at AirVenture? Looking the part, obviously, and yes, it's not a Ryan. It's the new Timber Tiger ST-L, a 95-percent, Light Sport homage to the art deco Ryan.

PilotVision is a headset-mounted augmented reality display. PilotVision interfaces wirelessly with the Adventure Pilot iFly GPS electronic flight bag, providing a head-up display that contains information on altitude, attitude, speed, terrain, traffic, airspaces, and more. The see-through prism eyepiece provides overlays of the HUD information.

For the wings, an aluminum spar was used in place of the wood spar found on the ST. The airfoil was changed from the original NACA 2412 to a Riblett GA30U-612, like that of the Kitfox.

The ribs are a bonded aluminum honeycomb, which provides added strength while saving weight, and they are coated with an epoxy primer for corrosion protection. The wings are covered with Superflite, and the paint is from Stewart Systems.

For simplicity, the drag/anti-drag wires were switched to a drag truss, similar to what's used on the Kitfox and Just Aircraft's Highlander/SuperSTOL series. "Mark from AeroMomentum, worked with Volato to design the 200, and in a month or two that will be flying," Jamie said.

"The 600 is my baby, that's the one that everybody wants but doesn't exist. I had a Turbo Cirrus and the thing just didn't go fast enough, and I wanted something faster... but there are no planes under 2.5 million that are pressurized that will do any decent 250, 270, 300 knots.

"We are working with one customer who wants to go that route." While the ST and PT-22 have the same lineage, they are very different aircraft. The PT-22 is about 300 pounds heavier than the ST, so they fly and handle very differently.

As in the 1980s, the Vulcanair P68 flies with perhaps Lycoming’s most durable engines on the wings, the ubiquitous, 200 hp IO-360-A1B6, rated for 2000 hours TBO. The retractable version is quite a bit quicker than the original fixed-gear model, 168 knots at 8000 feet. Service ceiling on both engines is listed at 20,000 feet; shut down one engine, and that’s reduced to 5000 feet.

Today, the Partenavia has been revived as the Vulcanair. Again, there are a myriad of models available, all based on the original Partenavias. Vulcanair has added an unpressurized turboprop model and a retractable to the mix, the P68Vr. Like the Tecnam P2006T, the Vulcanair retracts its wheels into a short pylon beneath the cabin.

Vulcanair P68Vr: Another entry from Italy, the Vulcanair, is a follow-on to the Partenavia P-68 series of light twins from the 1980s. In those days, the Naples, Italy, company offered three basic models, all six-seat twins, a normally-aspirated and turbocharged version in standard configuration and a clear-nose airplane (named the Observer) intended for law enforcement, pipeline patrol, wildlife management and other tasks demanding a good view of the ground. (The American distributor was Mira Slovak in Santa Paula, Calif., my neck of the sky, so guess who ferried four of the type from Naples, Italy, to Santa Paula.)

Multi-engine, piston aircraft were very much in style back in the 1970s and 1980s. Those were the days of $1.50/gallon avgas. At the time Piper, Cessna and Beech collectively had thirteen twin-engine models in production in the late ’70s. Today, Piper builds two, Beech offers one and Cessna has abandoned all twin engine, piston construction.

Diamond DA-42-VI Twin Star: Of the remaining international twins, Diamond’s entry couldn’t be any more individual. The Diamond Twin Star looks like something Luke Skywalker might pilot, it flies behind a pair of FADEC-controlled Austro diesel engines, sports dramatically upturned winglets on the tips and generally manifests a modern-as-tomorrow demeanor.

If your mission profile still has you deciding between a single-engine and twin-engine aircraft, maintenance costs could be the deciding factor. A common misconception is a twin-engine aircraft costs twice as much to maintain and operate, because it has two engines. While it’s true keeping up with inspections, overhauls and unscheduled repairs will cost you more on a twin-engine than a single-engine, overall it’s considerably less than double the price.

This isn’t a knock against twins, . There’s no question that pilots who operate over water or above mountains can benefit from the second engine. There’s also no question that a multi-engine aircraft, properly flown following an engine failure, can save your life.

With both engines turning, the 2006T delivers 1,140 fpm climb. Shutting down power on one side reduces that to 212 fpm, and single engine service ceiling is 7000 feet. Cruise on both Rotax 912Ss is 140 knots, so the airplane’s 54 gallons are good for about 4.5 hours plus reserve.

As you might expect, the modern Seneca V does everything better. Horsepower is up to 220, the avionics suite is the Garmin 1000 and the level of refinement is excellent. Cruise in the flight levels is better than 180 knots, and interior room is better than a Baron, more reminiscent of a Navajo’s cabin than a light twin’s. At 48 inches across, the Seneca V’s elbow room is equal or superior to that of any other piston twin.

There were once three Barons, but today, the 2015 G58 represents the most polished and sophisticated Baron ever offered. Beech products have always been blessed with a build-quality and control harmony that few other models can match, and the newest Baron exemplifies the best.

With an inevitable pair of 300 hp, Continental IO-550s on the wings, the Baron climbs at a maximum 1,730 fpm. Go to the whip at 7500-8500 feet and the G58 will manage 200 knots on about 36 gph. That provides 4.5 hours endurance for a range approaching 1,000 nm.

One slight problem is that the G58 has a fairly heavy empty weight. The result is a full fuel payload of only 330 pounds. That’s roughly two folks in the six, ultra-comfortable seats. If you need to fly two hours at max cruise, you can leave 65 gallons in the truck and still have payload for four folks plus baggage and a range of a least 600 nm.

For a twin, the Seminole is a relative lightweight at 3,800 pounds gross weight, and its counter-rotating propellers help tame the dreaded Vmc problem. Single-engine climb at gross is an relatively anemic 212 fpm, but in fairness, that’s not much worse than the other twins in the class Still, this trainer is marginal in Albuquerque during summer.

The pair of 200 hp, Continental TSIO-360 engines were turbocharged, so I never feared high-altitude airports (the airplane accepted several operations at Leadville, Colorado, elevation 9,927 feet MSL, without complaint), and the 123-gallon fuel capacity allowed easy four-hour hops plus reserve, worth 700 nm between pit stops. Long range power settings could stretch that to well over 800 nm.

There are several reasons for the cutbacks, but the primary one is simply economics. Twins no longer make sense when avgas can cost $6/gallon and maintenance at any good shop will set you back $100/hr. Never mind how much is too much.

Flying a single-engine or a twin-engine aircraft requires the same base instruction and licenses, but if you’re planning to fly a multi-engine aircraft, the Federal Aviation Administration requires more training, because with two engines, there’s more to manage and monitor in the cockpit.

Today’s Seneca V is more of a luxurious traveling machine. I spent three years and 700 hours with a Seneca II company airplane, and it performed every mission I could think of better than I had any right to expect. Most of the time, my flights were medium to long distance business travel, in one case an editorial, round robin from Los Angeles to Key West to Calgary, Canada, and back to Los Angeles.

Theory Classified Penetrating Tactical Manned Attack Aircraft

The reality is that the flying triangle, otherwise known as a "spanloader," is a well known modern aircraft design planform that is known for its potential low observable nature and aerodynamic efficiency. One place where this unique design has been rumored to have been employed above all others is for a manned tactical penetrating reconnaissance aircraft.

Such an aircraft is also at the very top of the "capability gap" list when it comes to suspected aircraft that could have, or even should have, been secretly developed and tested. One particular rumored designation stands out among all others when it comes to such a mission and a design is the TR-3A "Black Manta."

Steve Douglass has done some great in-depth reporting on his website and for many other mainstream publications in the past. Over the years I have occasionally been in contact with him about topics for which our interests overlap.

I have always found that my interactions with him, albeit limited in nature, as well as his written work, give every indication that he is an honest, thoughtful, and highly intelligent guy who cares a ton about aerospace issues.

Shadowy Manned Aircraft Murky Conclusions

Additionally, I know that others in the small world of defense journalism also share my impressions of Steve. As for his book, it is all but free to enjoy, so I doubt any monetary motive is large enough for him to ruin his reputation by executing some ridiculous ruse or charade.

This aircraft has had a few distinct missions rumored to have been assigned to it. The first was as a laser designator aircraft for the F-117. This makes little sense as the F-117 had just about the finest laser designation and infra-red sensor capabilities available during the late 1980's and early 1990's.

Having this single role as its central mission would seem extremely redundant, but having it as a secondary mission is plausible, especially considering the limitations of laser guidance during inclement weather. The other missions, and the ones that seem much more plausible, were as a penetrating and persistent manned reconnaissance platform and possibly as a tactical jamming and electronic warfare aircraft.

I think it is extremely safe to say that the DoD has had many more secret aerospace projects over the last 30+ years than the few that have been disclosed. In fact, there is rumored to be a good portion of a massive hangar at Area 51 full of these long retired but still shadowy programs.

There have been so many in fact that the USAF and industry have been known to just bury these historical but obscure aircraft as there is simply no room to store them at the sprawling Area 51 and Tonopah Air Force Base installations.

For a layman just looking at these pictures, which are arguably not of the best optical quality, I could totally understand how they could say that they are the result of a creative Photoshop session. If he sold me on these pictures wrongfully, then he also sold Aviation Week and many others as well.

So I can say with high, but not absolute certainty, that what you see in these pictures did fly within telephoto lens reach of Steve and his friend Dean on that day. As to how Steve has also been able to film or photograph bizarre aircraft flying around America's southwest on occasion, the best answer I can give is that he is the guy that is looking the hardest for them.

So what exactly were those mysterious "flying Doritos" booking it high over the Texas Panhandle, and more recently, Wichita, Kansas?

Nobody may be able, or willing, to give you a definitive answer, but Foxtrot Alpha is here to lay out all of the possibilities of what's almost certainly one of the military's big secrets. Finally, is this aircraft actually unmanned or not of a tactical size at all?

Maybe it's a prototype for the upcoming Long Range Strike-Bomber (LRS-B), or a shadowy tactical transport of some type. Maybe there is nobody inside the aircraft at all and they are in fact advanced stealthy drones.

There is also the possibility that Steve and Dean actually believe what they saw was really an unidentified aircraft, but are mistaken for some reason. As I stated in an earlier piece, I highly doubt this.

If they were not B-2s then there is nothing else known to be flying that looks like this aside from the diminutive, unmanned and shy RQ-170 Sentinel. Additionally, three triangular flying wings weaving high across the Texas sky is not "swamp gas" or some shared "hallucination."

The A-12 Avenger was supposed to be carrier capable, with folding wings, slow speed approach capability, heavy payload and large fuel volume, all of which came at the price of a very robust yet complex composite structure.

When you take away these aggressive design goals you have an aircraft that is fairly feasible to build, even if just for testing and developmental purposes. The "unidentified flying triangle" happens to also be a craze among the UFO crowd, and of all the sightings reported of various UFOs, the ones related to triangular craft often times seem the most believable, and/or corroborated.

Maybe some of these people were really seeing the triangular shaped aircraft that have been recently spotted. For years, people in and around the Southwestern US reported UFOs that have now turned out to be declassified secret projects such as the F-117 and SR-71 programs.

What is to say that some of these spotting were not in fact secret flying wing aircraft belonging to the boys in blue, not little green men? I am not saying that these aircraft were necessarily the prototypes for the A-12 aircraft, as officially none are said to exist, although over half a dozen were funded, but the timing is very odd.

Could the aircraft in question be a lighter, simpler surveillance forerunner to the A-12 Avenger, or even a technology demonstrator such as the "Sneaky Pete" aircraft that many said flew during the mid to late 1980's?

I have spent many years behind many types of camera bodies and lenses, shooting almost exclusively aircraft, and I have never taken a picture of an aircraft at altitude and thought "hey is that a secret flying wing aircraft," nor have any other aviation photographers

I know. Sure, once in a while those "hey what is up there" shots can be puzzling as to what type of airliner it is, but not where it clearly shows a flying wing, yet alone three of them in trailing formation!

I have also photographed the B-2 at altitude on multiple occasions, and none were even interesting enough to post or keep. Then there are the billions upon billions of dollars that are spent annually on these "black budget" programs, and certainly some have resulted in flying prototypes, if not production aircraft.

We were reminded of this in 2011 when a previously unheard of stealth helicopter's tail was left totally intact outside Bin Laden's backyard wall. Special Operations Command (SOCOM) could also have great use for an aircraft that could provide streaming video and general over-watch of special forces missions underway, or soon to be underway, deep inside enemy territory.

are on the horizon (or more likely already here). Finally, this machine could be a stealthy "wild weasel," built not just to suppress and jam enemy radar sites but to destroy them long before the age of miniaturized GPS guided glide bombs and other standoff weapons.

In the accounts little is noted about speed and if the aircraft were traveling at Mach 5 it would have been hard to even determine its shape, while there is also no reason to suggest why a prototype of a truly top-secret aircraft was flying slow enough

and low enough to be witnessed over the North Sea. Wouldn't there have been a danger that Soviet aircraft, submarines or other vessels would have seen such a plane? The Agency has had an Air Force for the better part of the century, made up of everything from down and dirty transports to the most advanced aircraft man has ever built.

Are we really to believe that they left the higher end of the spectrum after the A-12 Oxcart program of the 1960's and never looked back until the unmanned RQ-170 Sentinel arrived in their drone stable?

This is known as destruction of enemy air defenses (DEAD), and nowadays it can be done from tens of miles away using glide bombs such as the small diameter bomb (SBD) and wind corrected munitions dispenser (WCMD), but two decades ago this

technology was not available. Or is it possible that the A-12 Avenger prototypes that some have claimed were in fact built and housed at NAWS China Lake, have finally come out of the black in spectacular fashion now that the court proceedings surrounding the defunct program have finally been ended?

Having even a few low observable aircraft that could be used for different testing duties may have been beneficial for the Navy as the promise of fielding any low observable aircraft in any numbers has been unfulfilled since the cancellation of the A-12 some twenty plus years ago

. Even using these aircraft as stealthy aggressors for which to test new radars and other systems may have been worth the money spent to keep them flying or to get them flying in the first place.
